An expert in laser physics, femtosecond optics, nonlinear wave theory, plasma physics and biophotonics. Under his leadership, Russia’s most powerful petawatt (1015 watt, or 1 billion megawatt) laser system was created and new ways of using femtosecond radiation for material processing and medical applications were developed at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Applied Physics.
2015-present – Director of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the Department of Superfast Processes and head of the of Ultrafast Optical Processes Modeling Sector at the Institute of Applied Physics’ Department of Nonlinear Dynamics and Optics.
Member of the Academic Coordination Council of the Federal Agency for Scientific Organisations.
Member of the Board of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
Leader of a team of Russian scientists and researchers at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
Co-chairman of the International Committee on Ultra-High Intensity Lasers (ICUIL).
Member of the Commission on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (IUPAP).
Editorial board member of scientific journals “Physics-Uspekhi (Advances in Physical Sciences), “Izvestiya vuzov – radiofizika” (University News – Radiophysics).
