February 3, 2016

The Spanish research group Cybermetrics Lab has recently published the results of the rating Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, which evaluates how well a university is represented on the world wide web.

According to new data, the positions of Project 5-100 universities have strengthened: four universities are in the top 1000 (only 3 in July last year). NSU is in 614th place, MEPhI in 859th. MIPT has returned to  the ranks of the best 1000 universities (970th place), having risen by more than 100 points since last July. UrFU has made substantial progress and placed 978th. Another Project university – ITMO held down 1001th place.

Several universities have managed to make substantial progress in the Webometrics rating. For example, KFU, which has recently launched a new website, has jumped up 306 positions (to 1181th place), SSAU (2426th place) is up by 203 positions and NUST MISiS  by 121 (to 1972nd place).

In terms of the most rapid progress made (be the universities of the "first wave" of the Project), the undoubted leader is FEFU, which improved its position by 472 points. TSU is up 66 points, Lobachevski University - + 75, HSE - +31 and LETI – +45.

Project universities have made visible progress thanks to improving various indicators. MIPT and KFU have managed to better themselves with respect to all Webometrics indicators. All six “second wave” universities of Project 5-100 have made it into Webometrics: SibFU (1280th place), RUDN (1739st), SUSU (2854th), Tyumen State (3737th), First Medical (4139th) and IKBFU (4533th).

Webometrics is published twice a year – at the close of January and again at the end of July. It ranks approximately 25,000 world universities, of which 12,000 universities reach the final ranking tables. The methodology of Webometrics is based on four indicators with different criteria: number of external references, size of the website (number of pages indexed by Google), academic quality (citation of scientific publications on the basis of analytical data provided by SCImago Group) and openness (number of full-text files uploaded on the website and indexed by the Google search engine).
