Three Project 5-100 universities among the best 100 in THE Subject rankingsSeptember 30, 2016
Three Project 5-100 universities made it to the top league tables of Times Higher Education rankings by subject, published on September 28. Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology came out at No. 78 in Physical Sciences, while two other universities made their debut in subject rankings: Higher School of Economics at No. 83 in Business and Economics, and ITMO University at an impressive No.56 in Computer Science.
In 2016, THE Subject rankings show 100 strongest universities in 8 branches of knowledge (up from 6 branches previously). Subject rankings are based on the same 13 indicators from 5 categories as THE Global, but the rating methodology changed in 2016. THE added universities from various regions, particularly Asia and Latin America, and this enabled some countries to significantly strengthen their presence in the rating. Books were added to the list of indexed publications. Articles with over 1000 authors will also be analyzed now, and universities will get at least 5% per every affiliated author. These and other changes have seriously impacted the rankings, particularly the Physical Sciences one.
Of all Russian universities, Lomonosov Moscow State is the only other institution featured in THE rankings by subject, namely Arts & Humanities (No.66) and Computer Science (No.43).
