Two Project 5-100 universities feature in the top-100 QS World University Rankings by Faculty

NUST MISIS is among the top 50 QS World University Rankings by Subject

London, 28th February 2018: QS Quacquarelli Symonds has announced new QS World University Rankings by Subject and QS World University Rankings by Faculty 2018. The eighth edition of their QS World University Rankings by Subject and by Faculty provides an annual guide to the world’s leading institutions for the study of 48 different subjects and five composite subject groups.

Russia is home to 15 universities listed in the top-500 in the four broad groups of subjects: (faculties): Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management. 

This year’s rankings see Russia increase the number of its universities in the league table, the number of universities in the rankings have grown from 12 to 15, 11 of which are Project 5-100 participants now. These improvements are driven mainly by Project 5-100 participants, and then NUST MISiS, ITMO University and UrFU have entered the rankings for the first time.

Russian universities take three top-100 places across the four composite subject groups, two of which are Project 5-100 participants. NSU is 63th for Natural Sciences and HSE is 73th for Social Sciences & Management. Project 5-100 universities are also among the top-200 universities of the world: MIPT (106th-place rank) and MEPHI (146th-place rank) featured in the top-150 universities for Natural Sciences and NSU (200th) made the top-200 for Engineering & Technology.

Project 5-100 universities are ranked 26 times, 11 times more than last year. All of them have improved their positions this year and are ranked for more than two groups of subjects.

9 Project 5-100 universities take places in the Engineering & Technology subject group, and 8 universitites are listed in the Natural Sciences faculty table. Project 5-100 participants have also featured in the Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences & Management faculties.

The highest growth (more than 100 positions) demonstrated TPU in Engineering & Technology and TSU in Natural Sciences. By more than 80 positions climbed up MIPT in Engineering & Technology and HSE Social Sciences & Management. By more than 60 positions grew HSE and KFU in the faculty Arts & Humanities, NSU in Engineering & Technology, MEPHI in Natural Sciences.

Russia has 24 universities in QS Subject rankings. Among 24 universities ranked, 12 take part in Project 5-100. Project 5-100 universities featured in 22 subject rankings across the 48 subject tables: HSE (13 subject rankings), KFU (9 subject rankings), NSU (8 rankings), MIPT (6 subject rankings), TPU (5 subject rankings), TSU (5 subject rankings), MISiS (4 subject rankings), SPbPU (4 subject rankings), ITMO (3 subject rankings), UrFU (3 subject rankings), NGU (1 subject ranking).

Russian universities take 9 top-100 places in the QS Subject rankings 2018, 5 of which are Project 5-100 universities. Project 5-100 university’s best rank in the Subject tables is NUST MISiS (30th). This university features for the second year in a row in the top-50 universities in the world for the QS rankings by subject: Engineering - Mineral & Mining. MIPT, MEPHI and NSU make top-100 in Physics & Astronomy, and HSE in Politics & International Relations and Sociology.

Project 5-100 universities are also among the top-200 universities by 10 QS Subject rankings: NSU in “Mathematics”, “Archeology”, “Chemistry technology”, “Modern languages”, “Philosophy”; MIPT in “Mathematics”; HSE in “Economics & econometrics”, “Philosophy”, “Mathematics”, “Accounting & finance”, “Business & Management”, “History”, “Linguistics”; KFU in “Linguistics”, “Archeology”, “Modern linguistic”.

The positive dynamics in these subject tables is shown by KFU, NUST MISiS, TSU, HSE, MEPHI, ITMO University, UrFU.

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018 provides an annual guide to the world’s leading institutions for the study of 48 different subjects. Each of the subject rankings is compiled using four sources: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citation per paper, h-index.
