More Russian universities joined the ranking's placements of the most international universities this year. In 2017 there were only two Russian universities. The number of Russian universities featured in the ranking increased mainly due to Project 5-100 participants.

The ranking was compiled using four indicators: proportions of international students and staff, international co-authorship score, and international reputation metrics collected for the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018.
