Children and teenagers from Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan became winners and prize-winners of the Olympiad in Russian as a foreign language (RLI), history and culture of Russia. The event was timed to the 800th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Nevsky and the 200th anniversary of F.M. Dostoyevsky.

Our young compatriots and foreigners aged from seven to nineteen took part in the Olympiad. Participants went through four rounds, demonstrating knowledge and skills in reading and writing, as well as the history and culture of Russia.

The winners were determined in the Russian and foreign language groups and in three age categories. The jury consisted of Russian teachers working in Russian schools abroad and educational institutions at Russian embassies, as well as students and representatives of Russian compatriot organizations.

Those who want or are already planning to study in Russia in Russian will find it useful to take the test in Russian as a foreign language (TRKI). This is an international state examination to determine the level of Russian language proficiency. It is not obligatory to have a certificate for admission, each university decides independently whether to request a certificate from an applicant or not. However, in some cases, having the TRQI certificate may be an additional advantage. Contact the university you wish to apply to for information on the application package.

High quality of education, desire to study Russian language and love for Russian classics – these and other reasons lead foreigners to Russian universities. Graduates of Russian universities from Africa, Asia and the Middle East shared their Russian-language stories in an online conference.

Gabriel Kochofa came from Benin to the Soviet Union to study and after graduating from the Gubkin Oil and Gas University he stayed in Russia to teach. In his opinion, the main advantage of Russian education is that it is fundamental, with the foundation underpinned by practice. “My students and I do internships every year, people have the opportunity to ‘touch’ oil and see its deposits.”

Adu Yao Nikes, Associate Professor of Theory and History of International Relations at the PFUR, came to Russia and enrolled at the PFUR by chance – he had no relatives or acquaintances in Russia. However, his impressions of this “accident” were only the most positive. He graduated with honors and remained on the faculty of the PFUR, where he has been working for 10 years already.

Abedallah Iesa, counselor at the Embassy of the State of Palestine, described how he became a graduate of the Literary Institute named after A. M. Gorky. “My attitude toward the Russian language was formed in Palestine as a child. I wanted to study Russian literature from within, and in that sense the Literature Institute gave me a lot,” he noted. – If you get to know the world of the Russian man, he won’t push you away. Only in Russia will they open the fridge in front of a guest and offer you any dish you want,” Abedallah Iesa added.

Riad Najm, vice president of the Lebanese-Russian Friendship Society, shared that Lebanon now has no problems with the recognition of Russian diplomas, so Lebanese students gladly go to Russia. “They easily return, and the level of education received in Russia allows them to work and occupy high positions,” he noted.

Students from Africa have arrived to Nizhnevartovsk, which is located in western Siberia. For almost a year they will undergo a preparatory course – to learn Russian and to prepare for entering Yugorsk State University. The newcomers from Zambia and Ghana have yet to join the student life. Now they are getting acquainted to Nizhnevartovsk and getting used to the snow and cold, and so far they are accompanied by an interpreter on all excursions.

One of the first excursions for the guys was a visit to the exposition of Nizhnevartovsk State University. Here the photos of famous graduates are near the shells of the Great Patriotic War times, and mineral samples that the district is rich in are placed near the household implements found at archeological excavations. For international students to feel more comfortable in the student community, the university held a day of international communication, where everyone told interesting facts about his homeland – Africa or Russia.

The beginning of the study of foreign students fell on another round of the pandemic. So that they could attend classes without worrying about their health, students were examined and given all the necessary vaccinations, including vaccinations against coronavirus.

More than 90 percent of Russian universities accept students from abroad. Last year alone more than 100 thousand foreigners entered the country’s educational institutions. But such experience is still a novelty for Ugra universities and colleges.
